I really should not be allowed to play with image generators. I was going to clean, go to the gym, do laundry, and balance the checkbook. Instead I've been creating cartoons for myself. Lots of generators out there. Here is one site I like: http://www.imagegenerator.net/

Web 2.0 musings and meanderings

Well on the one hand I agree with the creator of the web, that there really is no such thing, or at least no clear definition for Web 2.0. Tim Berners-Lee said, "Web 1.0 is about connecting computers, while Web 2.0 is about connecting people," Berners-Lee replied, "Totally not. Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along. And in fact, you know, this 'Web 2.0,' it means using the standards which have been produced by all these people working on Web 1.0."

But from the library perspective Web 2.0 has meaning. It does point to our need to be more aware of and collaborative of the end user. But so far, we have mainly just paid lip service to it. Librarians talk about why we need to do all of these things, but the ideas die as they work their way up the chain of command. We will eventually get there, but as an institution kicking and screaming all the way.

This is a tool and trend I like. Less and less PC based and more browser based. Love the tagging, I finally got my bookmarks organized. Had to do a custom export, but that was pretty easy. I like the social aspect as well.

The technology that interests me is this new valve pressure gauge. You can see your car's tire pressure at a glance. No more squatting down to check the pressure. This is a big help for me because I check my tires once, sometimes twice a year. Yeah, I know that it should be done monthly. But the thing is, they charge for air now. I would rather pay a couple of hundred dollars exta in gas than pay the 75 cents to buy air. But with this valve thingee just shouting at me that I need air, I might, just might pop for the 75 cents.

If you wanted book or library related technolgy, there is a new version of Amazon Kindle. It is too expensive right now, but when it comes down it price it may revolutionize books and libraries. Then again, maybe not. I'll have to try it first.

RSS feeds and me

Okay, so I admit I am not a big fan of the RSS feed. I like the random searching and the serendipity of finding what you want, but not what you were originally looking for. The easiest thing is setting the goal, the hardest is remembering to play. Actually the hardest thing regarding 2.0 is starting over. I did this months ago, but don't feel like hunting around for old passwords:)
